Biosecurity support for the summerfruit and cherry industries (MT24010)
Project start date: September 2025
Project completion date: May 2030
This project will provide a dedicated biosecurity support for the Australian cherry and summerfruit industries. Both industries face significant and growing biosecurity risks - including pests of trade significance - that threaten their viability and market access. The project aims to proactively manage these risks by delivering resources, knowledge, support, and capability to mitigate, prepare for, and respond to biosecurity threats.
The project will be guided by a Project Reference Group (PRG) with representation from both industries, growers from each state, and Fruit Growers Tasmania (for pest free area expertise). The PRG will help prioritise activities and ensure the project remains responsive to emerging issues.
For growers and industry stakeholders the project will deliver practical resources and support to help manage biosecurity risks, maintain market access, and ensure industry resilience. Outputs will include updated biosecurity plans, on-farm guidelines, educational materials, and regular industry communications. The project will also provide a central resource for regulatory engagement and emergency response coordination.
This project is a strategic levy investment in the Hort Innovation Summerfruit and Cherry Funds
