Project summary:
This project is tackling a major challenge for the almond and pistachio industries: the almond carpophilus beetle, which can cause up to 40% damage to stored nuts. Current fumigation practices using sulfuryl fluoride (SF) need better data to ensure they work effectively across all life stages of this pest. This project will test SF dose rates and how the fumigant interacts with pistachios to develop practical, science-based fumigation protocols for commercial storage.
By improving postharvest pest control, the project will help protect the quality and supply of almonds and pistachios for domestic and international markets. Findings will be shared with industry through workshops, demonstrations, and reports, giving growers confidence in effective, sustainable pest management solutions.
