Building capability for emerging leaders in the apple and pear industry

Publication date: 12 January 2026

A new project announced today is set to strengthen technical and leadership skills across the Australian apple and pear industry.

Funded by Hort Innovation, the project will be delivered over five years by Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL). The program will have two-phases and will provide new entrants and emerging leaders with the tools they need to thrive in the rapidly evolving sector.

Building on the success of APAL’s pilot programs in 2024 and 2025, the project will combine technical orchard training with people management and leadership development.

Brett Fifield, CEO at Hort Innovation explained what this means for the industry: “Investing in capability building ensures the next generation of leaders are equipped with both technical expertise and strong leadership skills. This program will help future-proof the apple and pear industry by fostering talent and innovation.”

Participants will gain practical knowledge in orchard economics, crop management, irrigation and soil health, pest and disease control, and post-harvest handling. The program will also dive into building leadership skills such as communication, team dynamics, and transitioning from peer to manager.

The program will be delivered in stages, with technical training offered in 2026 and 2028, leadership development in 2027 and 2029, and a final alumni-driven phase in 2030 to address evolving industry needs.

The program will also generate industry communication outputs, including written articles, participant case studies, podcasts, and videologs to share insights and success stories with the wider industry.

This project (AP25001is funded by Hort Innovation, using the apple and pear research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government.
