CALD vegetable growers focus of new WA project

Publication date: 30 October 2025

A new initiative is set to strengthen support for Western Australian vegetable growers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, helping them access tailored resources and industry connections.

Funded by Hort Innovation and delivered by VegetablesWA, the project will provide targeted extension, education, training and innovation programs to help growers improve business performance, profitability and resilience. A particular focus will be on supporting Vietnamese-speaking growers, who represent one-third of WA’s vegetable industry.

Hort Innovation CEO Brett Fifield said, “This project is about making sure every grower, no matter their background, can benefit from the latest research, support and industry networks. By working with VegetablesWA, we’re helping to build a more inclusive and resilient vegetable sector.”

The project will be led by Regional Development Officer Chi Nguyen, whose fluency in Vietnamese and deep industry knowledge will help break down barriers for CALD growers. “Being able to communicate with growers in their preferred language and understand their unique needs is vital. This project will help ensure all growers have the opportunity to thrive,” said Chi.

In addition to direct support for growers, the initiative will guide Regional Development Officers nationally on engaging more effectively with diverse communities, ensuring all growers can participate fully in extension activities and benefit from industry advancements.

Peter Spackman, CEO of VegetablesWA, said, “We’re proud to partner with Hort Innovation on this important initiative. By providing tailored support and resources, we’re helping our growers adopt best practices, improve productivity and strengthen their businesses for the future.”

This project is funded by Hort Innovation, using the Vegetable research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government.
