COVID-19 led to households investing in home improvements and gardening

Publication date: 8 March 2021

The 2019/20 Horticulture Statistics Handbook showed the lifestyle category – cut flowers, nursery and turf – production value increased year on year by 6% from $2.965 billion in 2018/19 to $3.316 billion in 2019/20.

The lifestyle category is just one category in all of horticulture. In 2019/20, the entire horticulture sector exceeded $15 billion in production value with the lifestyle category (cut flowers, nursery and turf) accounting for 21 per cent of total horticulture value.

Hort Innovation Head of Data and Insights Adam Briggs said, “All lifestyle industries experienced positive value growth, with the largest from turf (14.9%), followed by nursery (5.0%) and cut flowers (4.2%). This growth was driven by an increase in demand from households investing in home improvements and their gardens while spending more time at home during COVID.”

Hort Innovation has recently launched the latest Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook which offers the most comprehensive and contemporary data available on all sectors of the Australian horticulture industry in one easy-to-read-guide.
