Ongoing project

Management of viral diseases for the Australian vegetable industry (VG24001)

Key research provider: University of Queensland

Project start date:16/04/2025

Project completion date: 14/03/2030

This project aims to develop eco-friendly, cost-effective solutions to manage viral diseases in vegetable crops, particularly those spread by insect vectors in Queensland growing regions. Led by a team of experts in plant defence peptides, virus management, and beneficial bacteria, the project will explore ways to prime natural plant defence pathways to enhance resistance. The research will generate biological collections, academic publications, and intellectual property, with the long-term goal of delivering practical virus control options for growers.

The outcomes will support improved crop resilience and reduced reliance on chemical treatments, offering sustainable disease management strategies for vegetable producers across Australia.
