Review of phytophthora root rot of chestnuts (CH14002)
What was it all about?
This project reviewed information related to Phytophthora root rot of chestnuts to provide recommendations for the chestnut industry, and for future R&D investment. Phytophthora root rot causes tree death in Australia so a better understanding of the disease, how it impacts on chestnut production in Australia, and improved management options were investigated.
The review prepared by the team provided details of the biology and epidemiology of the disease-causing organism, Phytophthora cinnamomi, knowledge necessary for developing an integrated management program.
Following the review, the team made the following recommendations for chestnut growers…
- Be sure to source resistant varieties and disease-free nursery trees
- Ensure good drainage for trees
- Ensure good orchard hygiene measures to prevent spread of the disease
- Boost organic matter in the soil with the addition of mulches, composts and manures
- Chemical use is most effective when applied at optimal times.
The review contains a recommended integrated management plan for chestnut orchards.
