What was it all about?

This short investment estimated the economic contribution of the almond industry to rural communities and Australia as a whole. Some key figures from the report are shown below:

  • In 2019/20, the almond industry contributed $1.6B to Australian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) equating to approximately 0.1 per cent of Australia’s GDP
  • Of the $1.6B, $534.6M was in growing and processing activities, $44.0M in industry investment, and $1.1B as a result of flow-on economic activity
  • As a whole, the almond industry employed 9,560 people
  • Almonds are produced in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. The highest contributions come from the Sunraysia and Riverland regions
  • In these regions, the almond industry is a significant driver of the economy, directly and indirectly employing 2,206 people (Sunraysia region), and 946 (Riverland)
  • The total area planted has increased from 3,500 hectares in the year 2000 to 53,014 hectares in 2019.
