Key research provider: Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia
Publication date: Thursday, August 24, 2023

What was it all about?

From October to December 2022, this project produced a series of lessons about mushrooms. These lessons were targeted at secondary school students from years seven to ten and were aligned with the Australian curriculum. They provided hands-on interactive activities for teachers to use and offered a detailed understanding of the science behind mushrooms.

The lessons covered a range of topics, including:

  • What mushrooms are
  • Food webs and energy flow
  • Identifying mushrooms using dichotomous keys
  • Investigating mushroom growth
  • The mushroom supply and marketing chain
  • Sustainable food choices
  • Promoting healthy eating.

These lessons were designed to be comprehensive and accessible to a wide range of teachers.

Additionally, an associated card game was created to complement the resources. The lessons and resources provided a valuable insight into the mushroom industry for Australian schools, offering relevant scientific content that was linked to the Australian curriculum.
