Review of the biosecurity plan for the berry sector (MT18004)

Key research provider: Plant Health Australia
Publication date: Thursday, December 18, 2025

What was it all about?

This project delivered an updated, industry‑endorsed Biosecurity Plan for the Australian berry sector, bringing blueberries, rubus and strawberries into a single, coordinated framework. The project identified and prioritised the key exotic pests and diseases that pose the greatest risk to Australian berry production and trade, and set out clear actions to strengthen preparedness and response across the sector.

The project reviewed existing biosecurity plans and undertook detailed assessments of more than 450 exotic pests and diseases that could affect berry crops. From this work, 34 high priority pests were identified based on their likelihood of entry, establishment and spread, and their potential economic impact. The project also assessed current preparedness resources, such as surveillance programs, diagnostic protocols, fact sheets and contingency plans, and documented gaps. These findings were brought together in Biosecurity Plan for the Australian Berry Sector (Version 1.5), supported by threat summary tables, a preparedness table and a Biosecurity Action Plan.

The updated plan is expected to help growers by improving early detection, supporting better on‑farm biosecurity, guiding future research and extension, and strengthening the industry’s ability to protect productivity, market access and long‑term sustainability.
