Australian Macadamia Breeding and Evaluation Program (MC24004)
Project start date: 1 July 2025
Project completion date: 30 June 2030
This project will build on the achievements of previous national breeding programs to enhance the profitability and sustainability of the Australian macadamia industry. Its aims to develop new macadamia varieties that address industry needs, generate new progenies with desirable traits, and conduct comprehensive evaluation activities.
By focusing on both primary and secondary evaluations, the project will provide early performance data on new selections, enabling the identification of cultivars with the highest potential for success. The project will also contribute to the Macadamia Regional Variety Trials, ensuring that new selections are rigorously tested across diverse environments.
For growers and industry stakeholders, the project will deliver new, high-performing cultivars with increased yields, reduced management costs, and improved resistance to diseases and pests. These cultivars will also be selected for their adaptability to changing climatic conditions, ensuring long-term sustainability and global competitiveness for the Australian macadamia industry.
This project is a strategic levy investment in the Hort Innovation Macadamia Fund
