Project summary

The Australian avocado industry is entering a critical phase of growth, with production volumes expected to more than double compared to 2021 levels. To absorb this increase, an estimated additional 30,000 tonnes annually, industry must expand both domestic and international markets. With 35% of avocado trees under six years old, export market development has become essential to relieve pressure on domestic supply and ensure profitable farm gate returns. The AV23003 Avocado Market Access and Trade Development Project (2024–29), funded by Hort Innovation and delivered by Avocados Australia, is designed to address this challenge by developing and expanding export markets.

For growers, the project delivers tangible benefits by building export capability across the supply chain. It supports industry-wide engagement with trade partners, enhances technical market access, and provides tools and training to help growers participate effectively in export channels. By improving supply chain connectivity and delivering extension services focused on export readiness, the project empowers growers to optimise product quality at point of sale and capture premium pricing in overseas markets. Ultimately, it contributes to a more resilient and diversified industry, with increased export volumes, stronger market positioning, and improved grower returns.
