Apple and pear in-store quality and education program FY25 (AP24001)

Key research provider: Strikeforce
Publication date: Tuesday, October 21, 2025

What was it all about?

This project delivered insights into how Australian apples and pears are presented, handled and experienced by shoppers in major retail stores. It confirmed that simple improvements in retail execution can protect fruit quality, reduce losses and support stronger sales. The program also produced fresh benchmark data on availability, quality and defects, alongside practical training resources to help lift standards in-store.

During 2025, field teams carried out regular audits in ALDI and Drakes stores across multiple states. They assessed stock levels, fruit quality and common defects such as bruising and rots, and conducted internal quality checks to understand how fruit performed beyond its outward appearance. Shopper surveys were used to identify what drives purchasing decisions, while store staff received short, practical training sessions supported by videos, briefing materials and QR-linked digital resources.

The project addressed ongoing challenges at retail that can undermine grower returns, including inconsistent shelf availability, visible defects and variable fruit handling practices. These issues can reduce shopper confidence and discourage repeat purchases, even when overall supply and quality are good.

The findings showed that while availability and quality were generally solid, bruising and rots remain key risks, particularly later in the day when replenishment drops. Shopper insights reinforced that freshness, appearance and variety matter more than price. For growers and industry, the results provide clear direction on where improvements will have the greatest impact, helping to reduce waste, strengthen consumer confidence and support ongoing demand for Australian apples and pears.
