Pathway to carbon neutral whole orchard recycling in almond orchards - phase 2 (AL25002)

Summary:

This project builds on the outcomes of Phase 1 (AL21000), continuing the investigation into whole orchard recycling (WOR) as a pathway to carbon neutral almond production in Australia.  

Whilst phase 1 focused on demonstrating the feasibility and potential benefits of WOR, phase 2 shifts from demonstration to quantification. Led by Flinders University, this phase aims to generate robust data on WOR’s contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of almond orchards. It will measure carbon storage and turnover, greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon accumulation in new plantings. The project will also assess co-benefits such as improved irrigation efficiency, enhanced soil health, and increased yields, while quantifying potential risks like increased soil pathogen pressure and nitrogen drawdown. 

Data will be collected in a manner that enables its use in Australian Life Cycle Assessment and as input into approved carbon market methodologies. Learnings will help growers adopt WOR with clear expectations for carbon farming, soil health, irrigation efficiency, and productivity. The project will also support almond processors and sellers in strengthening sustainability credentials, with WOR potentially underpinning carbon neutral almond production practices.
