Evaluation of potential prunus rootstocks for almond production – stage 2 (AL16006)

This investment, which ran from 2018 to 2021, continued earlier industry work to evaluate a range of potential new almond rootstocks and assess their compatibility with the common almond cultivars grown in Australia, and their performance under Australia’s growing conditions.
The earlier work (through Hort Innovation project AL11012) saw 14 rootstocks, including Nemaguard, planted for evaluation at a trial site in Lindsay Point, Victoria. This project continued the efforts to evaluate these rootstocks by comparing 11 of them with the industry standard Nemaguard. The rootstocks evaluated included Adafuel, Brights Hybrid, Cornerstone, Felinem, Garnem, GF557, GF677, GF749, Hansen 536, Krymsk 86, and Monegro.
Key parameters measured included lowering dates; seasonal and cumulative yield; fruit crack-out, weight and stick tights; tree vigour and production efficiency; light interception, tree size and anchorage; leaf and soil nutrition; nematodes; and graft compatibility.
