What is the apple and pear levy?

A levy applies to apples and pears produced in Australia that are either sold by a grower or used by a grower to make other goods.

Levies are collected by the Australian Government and provided to Hort Innovation. Hort Innovation works with growers and industry to invest the levies into agreed priorities. For R&D, this includes Australian Government contributions to support strategic R&D initiatives.

You can find full details on levy rates, and how to lodge a return and make a payment, with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) on the government website.

Frequently asked questions

How are levy investment decisions made?

Investment decisions are guided by the industry’s Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) and Annual Investment Plan (AIP). The SIP sets longer-term priorities. The AIP sets out how levy funds will be invested over the year against those priorities. Find out more about how we Invest.

Where do investment ideas come from?
Investment ideas can come from growers, delivery partners, past projects, research networks, industry bodies and regional extension activity. Hort Innovation checks whether ideas align to the SIP and whether investment is needed before progressing them. Growers can also submit ideas through the investment idea form or by contacting Hort Innovation.
How are investments prioritised?

Hort Innovation consults with growers through advisory panels made up of growers and other industry experts, see more details on the panels below. Recommendations are developed against the Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) and reviewed with the panels, considering the expected impact and available funding. Investments that progress are reflected in the  Annual Investment Plan (AIP).

How are investments progressed?
Once prioritised, projects are established through a tender process to select a delivery partner. Delivery partners report against milestones, and a final report is produced at the end of the investment and made available to industry.
