An objective basis for temperate nut industries expansion (MT14041)

Key research provider: The NSW Department of Primary Industries
Publication date: Tuesday, March 8, 2016

What was it all about?

Temperate nut industries (almond, chestnut, hazelnut, pecan, pistachio and walnut) have experienced unprecedented growth in Australia over the last decade. This project looked at climate, water availability, and soil type to identify regions suitable for the expansion of each of these nut industries.

Chill accumulation was identified as the most critical factor limiting regional suitability in Australia.

The project produced maps and information packages outlining the research findings and offering both general and specific regionalised data to support expansion decision making.
