This project gave the Australian citrus industry an up-to-date evidence base on the nutrition and health effects of 100% fruit juice to support engagement with the Australian Dietary Guidelines review and other policy discussions. Research found some health and nutritional benefits associated with 100% juice, alongside limited evidence of harm. Australian dietary data also showed that 100% fruit and vegetable juice makes a meaningful contribution to fruit intake.
Researchers assessed evidence on 100% juice and health through two linked streams of work: a peer-reviewed umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and a broader literature review covering additional health outcomes and nutritional composition. Findings from both streams were combined into a practical evidence report for industry use.
The evidence was updated in 2026 to include newly published research and findings from the 2023 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey. Key outputs included a scientific paper published in Nutrition Reviews and an updated plain-language report designed to support future submissions, communications and stakeholder engagement.
Growing debate about the role of 100% juice in healthy diets highlighted the need for a current and credible review of the available evidence. Concerns about fibre and free sugars, along with ongoing policy discussions, created a need for clear information to help inform industry advocacy and engagement.
The project provides the citrus industry with a stronger foundation for participation in dietary guideline reviews, nutrition policy discussions and stakeholder education. Industry feedback rated the research and supporting report highly for quality, credibility and usefulness, indicating the findings met or exceeded expectations.
