What was it all about?

This project developed the Schoolyard Greenprint, a practical guide to help Australian secondary schools create outdoor spaces that better support student wellbeing. Shaped by research and input from students, educators, designers, community organisations and wellbeing experts, the Greenprint reflects the needs and experiences of school communities across Australia. 

The research found many students are not fully supported by current schoolyard design. Students wanted more shaded, comfortable and quiet spaces where they can relax, recharge and connect with friends. The study also highlighted the important role that nature, shade, seating, privacy and opportunities for independence can play in supporting wellbeing.  

Drawing on research, co-design activities, surveys, mapping and user testing, the project produced four practical guides to help schools assess and improve their outdoor environments. Together, the resources provide evidence-based advice, case studies and tools that schools can use to create more inclusive and supportive outdoor spaces.  

By addressing a gap in guidance on how secondary school outdoor spaces can support wellbeing, the Greenprint offers a practical framework for schools. It includes 22 design guidelines, more than 100 practical solutions, nine schoolyard typologies and 11 engagement tools to help school communities plan and deliver meaningful improvements.
