This investment was part of a collaborative R&D program of tree crop-specific projects established to deliver step-change orchard system intensification knowledge, understanding and technical advancements to the avocado industry.
It revealed that avocado intensification is limited by the lack of low-vigour cultivars and effective canopy management. While high-density plantings and shade netting improved early yields and microclimate, excessive vegetative growth and pruning requirements constrained long-term productivity. The ‘Ashdot 17’ rootstock showed promise for higher yields and efficiency, but further validation is needed. Growers gained new insights into rootstock selection, growth regulator use, and the importance of balancing canopy and reproductive development for consistent, profitable production.
National Tree Crop Intensification in Horticulture (AS18000) was funded through Hort Innovation Frontiers with co-investment from Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Peirson Memorial Trust and contributions from the Australian Government.
