What was it all about?
This program developed immersive training resources to help improve workforce skills and support more consistent avocado quality across the supply chain. The project produced training for avocado pickers, packhouse workers and Woolworths retail staff, turning industry best practice into practical learning experiences that can be delivered consistently and at scale.
The project responded to an industry need for accessible, repeatable training to support workers involved in harvesting, packing, handling and selling avocados. Workforce turnover and inconsistent handling practices can affect fruit quality and consumer experience, creating an ongoing need for effective training.
Working closely with growers, packers, Avocados Australia, Hort Innovation and Woolworths, the project developed three training modules using virtual reality technology, 360-degree video, interactive scenarios and knowledge checks. The picker and packer modules also include mobile and tablet versions, making the training accessible to businesses that do not use VR headsets. The modules cover topics including harvest readiness, fruit handling, grading, storage and quality management.
The training resources provide an ongoing tool for staff onboarding, refresher training and workforce development across orchard, packhouse and retail settings. By supporting more consistent avocado handling and quality throughout the supply chain, the project is expected to contribute to improved consumer experiences and support long-term demand for Australian avocados.
