What is it all about?

This five-year project aims to strengthen the quality of Australian avocados by monitoring and reporting retail fruit quality and wholesale maturity against industry targets. Consumer demand depends on quality at the retail shelf, and with avocado production continuing to grow, maintaining consistent fruit quality is important to ensure supply does not outpace demand and to protect grower returns.  

To support this, weekly retail quality monitoring will be conducted across major and independent retailers in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, alongside monthly maturity monitoring at wholesale markets. Results will be delivered through a secure online dashboard, providing confidential feedback to individual packers and retailers, as well as de-identified monthly and seasonal reporting for industry.  

Intended outcomes include improved and more consistent fruit quality at retail, better identification of supply chain quality issues, and increased adoption of best practice in postharvest and supply chain management. The project will also provide long-term industry benchmarking data to track progress against quality targets and support future quality improvement activities across the avocado supply chain.
