What was it all about?

This project delivered a clear, industry‑endorsed Investment Roadmap to guide future research aimed at improving yield consistency in Australian avocado orchards. Through strong grower and scientific input, the project built consensus on the key factors contributing to irregular and alternate bearing and set priorities for where future investment is most needed to support more reliable production.

The project used a multi‑stage process that included a review of existing research, a national survey of avocado growers, international consultation, and an in‑person workshop with growers, advisers and scientists. Feedback was also gathered through a Western Australia grower session, an industry webinar and written submissions.

Together, these activities informed the development of the Investment Roadmap for Enhancing Yield Consistency in the Australian Avocado Industry, supported by a literature review, grower survey, workshop presentations and an industry article. These resources are available through the avocado Best Practice Resource.

Irregular and alternate bearing cause large year‑to‑year swings in yield, reducing profitability and making market supply less predictable. The project confirmed that these issues affect growers across all regions and that the commonly used terms can be confusing. Participants agreed it was more useful to focus on the key stages of crop development where problems arise.

The Roadmap is expected to guide long‑term, science‑based investment that helps growers achieve more consistent yields. By clearly identifying knowledge gaps across flowering, pollination, fruit retention and canopy growth, it provides a shared direction for research that can lead to practical management tools and improved industry confidence over time.
