What was it all about?

This project supported a study tour to Europe to increase Australian horticulture’s understanding of how biological crop protection and plant health products are being used in leading overseas production systems. 

The tour found that biologicals are now a core part of horticultural production in Europe, particularly in response to tighter chemical regulations, retailer requirements and market access pressures. However, biologicals were most successful when integrated into broader farming systems rather than used as direct replacements for conventional chemistry. The project identified practical pathways for Australian growers to evaluate and adopt biologicals through local validation, stronger advisory support and integrated pest management approaches.

The project involved visits to Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, including attendance at Fruit Logistica and visits to commercial farms, researchers, agronomists and global crop input companies. Researchers and growers examined biological crop protection products, biostimulants, regulatory frameworks and emerging production technologies. A desktop analysis of international biological products and adoption trends complemented on-the-ground observations and stakeholder discussions. Insights were shared through industry presentations, grower engagement activities and a detailed final report.  

The findings provide a foundation for future investment in biological crop protection, local validation trials and grower extension activities. The project highlighted the importance of building confidence through Australian-based trials, strengthening advisor capability and developing practical adoption frameworks that integrate biologicals into existing production systems. It also identified opportunities for continued international benchmarking, stronger collaboration with global crop input suppliers, and increased use of automation and precision technologies alongside biological products.
