What was it all about?

Sound industry planning rested on the quality of information the industry had of its production base.

With this in mind, Citrus Australia coordinated this project to provide the citrus industry with an updated national plantings database (NPD) of trees of each citrus variety growing in each region.

This information allowed for accurate analysis of industry production trends, and would strengthen decision making for future market development.

This project updated the NPD surveys previously carried out in 2003 and 2008. These three surveys have provided significant benefits to the industry, such as:

• Short-term and long-term crop forecasting by growers, packers and marketers
• Decision making by individual growers on their future planting and tree removal choices
• Planning for logistical requirements throughout the supply chain at a company, regional and national level
• Information for processors, wholesalers, retailers and exporters on future market development directions.

And, although not a prime aim of the project, the NPD also provided a record of citrus planting locations for biosecurity purposes.
