Industry level lifecycle analysis updated to better understand eco-credentials and minimise risks (MU22005)
What was it all about?
This investment gave the Australian mushroom industry a clear and consistent way to measure and understand its environmental performance.
The research delivered an updated, industry‑wide life cycle assessment and a practical benchmarking tool that allows growers to calculate their own carbon footprint and compare it with industry averages. For the first time, growers have a trusted baseline that shows where environmental impacts are highest and how on‑farm decisions influence emissions.
The project worked with a pilot group of three major mushroom growers to collect 12 months of production data and develop an ISO‑compliant life cycle assessment. This analysis examined environmental impacts across the full production system, from raw materials and composting through to growing, packaging and distribution. An easy‑to‑use Excel tool was also developed so growers can enter simple on‑farm inputs to estimate their greenhouse gas emissions.
The outcomes will help growers make informed decisions about energy use, packaging, production efficiency and input choices. Over time, this work is expected to support lower emissions, stronger sustainability credentials and a more competitive and resilient mushroom industry.
