Ongoing project

Optimising Protected Cherry Production (CY24004)

Key research provider: New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSWDPIRD)

Project start date: 25/06/2025

Project completion date: 30/04/2028

This project aims to support Australian cherry growers in making informed decisions about investing in protected cropping systems (PCS) and applying optimal management practices to achieve high-quality yields. Through economic benchmarking tools, grower-led trials, and regional case studies across NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, the project will assess the costs, benefits, and impacts of PCS on orchard environments and fruit quality. Findings will be shared through targeted extension activities including workshops, orchard walks, and practical communication materials.

The outcomes will enhance grower confidence in PCS investments, improve understanding of region-specific management strategies, and contribute to increased profitability, efficiency, and sustainability in line with the Cherry Strategic Investment Plan
