Vale Peter Leach

Peter Leach - website article

The Australian horticulture industry has lost one of its most respected and influential market access researchers, Peter Leach.

For more than three decades, Peter dedicated his career to helping Australian growers access domestic and international markets through science. His work on fruit fly disinfestation and phytosanitary treatments underpinned market access opportunities for countless horticultural businesses and helped strengthen Australia's reputation as a trusted trading partner.

Peter was also instrumental in the development and success of the Fresh and Secure Trade Alliance (FASTA), helping build it into a nationally and internationally recognised program that brings together industry, government and researchers to solve some of horticulture's most complex trade and biosecurity challenges. Through FASTA, his legacy will continue to support innovation, market access and the long-term prosperity of Australian horticulture.

Beyond his many professional achievements, Peter was known for his generosity, collegiality and commitment to mentoring others. He freely shared his knowledge, championed collaboration, and inspired many researchers, industry leaders and colleagues throughout his career.

On behalf of Hort Innovation and the Australian horticulture industry, we extend our sincere condolences to Peter's wife Sri, son Thomas, and all of his family, friends and colleagues.

Thank you, Peter, for your extraordinary contribution to Australian horticulture. Your work has opened markets, shaped international standards, strengthened biosecurity, and created lasting benefits for growers that will endure for generations to come.
