This project brought the vegetable industry together to clearly define the most pressing challenges in managing nematodes and to set priorities for future research and investment.

Through broad stakeholder engagement, it produced a shared, industry‑led view of what growers need to better detect, manage and reduce the impacts of nematodes on crop yield, quality and profitability. The project delivered a clear strategic direction to guide Hort Innovation’s future investments in nematode management.

The project reviewed past and current nematode research, then ran a series of online workshop‑webinars with growers, agronomists, researchers and supply‑chain partners. Participants shared on‑ground experiences using interactive tools and surveys. These insights were analysed and tested through a prioritisation process to identify critical gaps and opportunities. Key outputs included a detailed challenge analysis, stakeholder insights, and a strategic plan outlining priority investment areas such as diagnostics, integrated pest management, biological controls, and grower education.

Nematodes remain a persistent and often under‑detected problem for vegetable growers. Damage is frequently identified too late, control options can be limited or costly, and reliance on chemical treatments is increasingly challenging. Growers also face gaps in diagnostics, extension support and practical, crop‑specific guidance.

The findings will support more targeted, grower‑focused investment in nematode management. Over time, this work is expected to improve early detection, encourage integrated management approaches, reduce yield losses and strengthen the resilience and sustainability of vegetable production systems.
