    What is it all about?

This project is developing rapid diagnostic tools, enhancing targeted surveillance, identifying effective management strategies, and engaging stakeholders for effective guava root-knot nematode (GRKN) management.

The GRKN is a highly pathogenic plant parasite that poses a significant threat to the Australian vegetable industry due to its broad host range and ability to overcome resistance genes in various crops.

    Challenge

The primary challenge of this project is efficiently identifying and managing GRKN, a newly detected threat to Australian horticulture that jeopardises crop health and yield. Due to its recent detection, GRKN’s broad host range and capacity to overcome root-knot resistance genes in various crops, it is difficult to contain and manage.

Therefore, rapid, reliable diagnostic tools and targeted surveillance are essential for tracking the spread of GRKN and other root-knot nematode species. Developing effective management strategies, including resistant crops and biological control methods, alongside effective industry communication to raise awareness and readiness, is critical to minimising the impact of GRKN.

    Response

In response to these challenges, the project is taking a comprehensive approach that includes the development of diagnostic tools that can quickly detect GRKN in large volumes of samples and conducting targeted surveillance to map the distribution of GRKN and other root-knot nematode species.

The project is also identifying management options, such as resistant cover crops, suitable weed hosts, and potential biological control agents.

A strong emphasis is placed on communication and extension of best practices, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, such as growers, agronomists, and policymakers, while leveraging international expertise to improve awareness of GRKN management strategies.

    Benefits

This project will significantly benefit the Australian vegetable industry by equipping it with rapid diagnostic tools for early detection of GRKN, allowing for a swift and effective response to new outbreaks.

It will improve early detection and management of GRKN outbreaks, update knowledge of nematode distribution, and improve identification of resistant crops and effective control measures will help mitigate the impact of GRKN on crop health and yield.

Engaging stakeholders will enhance collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers, growers, and industry professionals, leading to increased awareness and adoption of best practices. Ultimately, this project will contribute to a more resilient and prepared Australian vegetable industry.
