    What was it all about?

This project investigated and addressed the issue of Internal Fruit Rot (IFR) in capsicums affecting Australian growers, identifying the causal organisms and assessing management strategies to mitigate economic losses and enhance marketability.

    Challenges

IFR in capsicums creates economic losses, reduces marketability, and threatens consumer confidence. The disease primarily develops in red capsicums, with symptoms rarely seen in green fruit. The complexity of IFR arises from multiple causal fungi, including Alternaria alternata and Fusarium spp. Poor fungicide coverage, limited motility of treatments within plants, and ineffective chemical and biological controls compound the difficulty. Environmental factors like wind and plant defences further complicate disease control, leaving growers without reliable solutions for managing IFR effectively.

    Response

In response to the challenges posed by IFR, the project undertook a multi-faceted approach. A thorough literature review was conducted, and consultations were held with local growers and experts to gather insights on the issue. Field and laboratory studies were implemented to identify the pathogens involved and understand their mechanisms of infection. Additionally, trials with various chemical and biological treatments were performed to evaluate their effectiveness. The research provided valuable information on the pathogens and highlighted areas for improvement in disease management. Results and recommendations were shared via the Soil Wealth Integrated Crop Protection website and industry publications, ensuring growers and stakeholders access to updated knowledge and insights for managing IFR.

    Benefit

The project provided critical insights into the pathogens and mechanisms driving IFR in capsicums, equipping growers with a better understanding of the disease. It identified gaps in current control methods and emphasised the need for improved spray techniques and innovative technologies. This knowledge supports the development of more effective strategies to mitigate economic losses and maintain market confidence. By fostering informed decision-making and innovation, the project strengthens the industry's capacity to manage IFR and ensures sustainable capsicum production in Australia.
