Where should all the trees go? Investigating the impact of tree canopy cover on socio-economic status and wellbeing in local government areas (NY16005)

This project followed on from earlier research that analysed tree canopy cover in Australia’s metropolitan local government areas (LGAs) and produced the report Where are all the trees?
The objective was to look at changes to canopy cover in these LGAs, identifying priority areas for greening across Australia and monitoring progress towards the nursery industry’s 202020 Vision goal of making Australia’s urban areas 20 per cent greener by the year 2020.
The team also looked at the relationships between tree canopy cover and socioeconomic, health and wellbeing factors in different areas.
The researchers found two consistent trends for tree canopy cover and total vegetation change: canopy cover loss between 2009 and 2016, and offset by gains in shrub or sapling cover during the same period.
