    What was it all about?

This investment is part of a collaborative R&D program of tree crop-specific projects established to deliver step-change orchard system intensification knowledge, understanding and technical advancements to the macadamia industry.

It demonstrated that higher planting densities can significantly boost early yields and long-term profitability, provided that effective canopy management and suitable, less vigorous cultivars are used. Trials highlighted the value of rootstock selection (e.g., ‘Beaumont’ for poorly drained soils) and growth retardants for controlling vigour. Economic analyses confirmed that high-density systems can deliver greater returns, but require careful planning and ongoing management. Growers now have evidence-based guidelines for adopting intensive systems tailored to their orchard conditions.

    Details

National Tree Crop Intensification in Horticulture (AS18000) was funded through Hort Innovation Frontiers with co-investment from Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Peirson Memorial Trust and contributions from the Australian Government.
