What is it all about?

This project works with the Australian citrus industry to improve how fruit quality is maintained after harvest, from the orchard through packing, storage and transport to market. It builds on earlier work to develop and test new postharvest technologies, treatments and management practices that are practical and cost‑effective for commercial use.

The project assesses new and existing postharvest tools, including coatings, treatments and handling practices, through laboratory, semi‑commercial and commercial trials. Industry input is central, with growers, packers and exporters guiding priorities through a project reference group. Research findings are shared through articles, fact sheets, workshops, industry presentations and other extension activities to support on‑farm and packinghouse decision‑making.

Poor postharvest management can lead to fruit decay, quality loss and waste, reducing grower returns and limiting access to domestic and export markets. By independently evaluating new options and refining best practice, the project aims to help industry manage these risks more effectively.

The expected outcomes are improved fruit quality, reduced losses through the supply chain, better management of residues and decay issues, and stronger confidence in meeting market requirements. Over time, this will support grower profitability, export performance and a more skilled citrus industry with access to up‑to‑date, practical postharvest knowledge.
