What is it all about?

This project is testing the use of wearable exoskeleton technology to improve worker safety and productivity in Australian horticulture. The trials focus on physically demanding on farm tasks where workers are at higher risk of fatigue, strain or injury.

The project uses AI sensor technology to measure worker movement and injury risk during normal work activities, both with and without the ExxoLift™ exoskeleton. On farm trials are conducted with industry partners to assess how the technology fits into everyday operations. Data is collected on physical strain, productivity, worker comfort and usability, alongside feedback from growers and staff.

Key activities include selecting suitable trial sites, onboarding workers, collecting baseline and follow up data, and analysing changes in safety outcomes and task performance. The project will also examine the financial implications of adoption, including potential cost savings and return on investment for growers.

Outputs include interim public summaries, videos, factsheets, case studies and a final report outlining findings and recommendations. The results will help growers understand where exoskeletons may be practical, the benefits and limitations of the technology, and whether it could support safer, more productive horticulture workplaces.

Pilots underway include:

• AS25201: This trial will test the ExxoLift™ exosuit at Burlington Berries and Pinata Farms in Tasmania.
• AS26201: This trial will test the ExxoLift™ exosuit at Costa Group, Adams Farms and Montague Farms.
