    What was it all about?

This project improved the control of Yellow Sigatoka in north Queensland banana plantations by introducing a dedicated liaison role to monitor disease levels and support growers. Regular farm visits and follow‑up actions led to better compliance with plant health regulations and a clear improvement in leaf disease management across the region.

The project funded a Yellow Sigatoka Liaison Officer who visited commercial banana farms at least twice a year. During inspections, growers were shown how to identify disease levels and were advised when to carry out de‑leafing and maintain fungicide programs. A stepped process was used, starting with verbal advice, followed by written notices and referral to Biosecurity Queensland if needed. The role also provided education, shared resources such as leaf disease guides, and supported data collection using digital tools to track properties and disease levels.
