    What was it all about?

From 2018 to early 2020, this investment has strengthened the European export market for Australian almonds through a coordinated and collaborative schedule of international trade exhibitions, seminars and communications.

This project supported the Australian almond industry presence at three major European food trade exhibitions: Anuga in 2017, SIAL Paris in 2018, and Anuga in 2019. These events include an almond exhibition, with Australian growers and exporters co-exhibiting under the Australian Almonds brand, promoting product and strengthening relationships with new and existing buyers.

Anuga Trade Fair - Cologne, Germany (2017 and 2019)

The Anuga Trade Fair at Cologne in Germany is one of the world’s largest food and beverage industry events. In 2017, approximately 165,000 visitors from 198 countries attended, with more than 7,400 exhibitors from 107 countries. Similar numbers were seen at the 2019 event.

The Australian Almonds exhibition was attended by four of the five Australian almond exporters: Olam Orchards Australia, Select Harvests, Almondco Australia, Nut Producers Australia and the Almond Board of Australia.

The stand was within the Fine Foods section of the exhibition and situated near the USA pavilion, providing convenience for customers to visit both the Californian and Australian almond industry pavilions easily.

At the 2017 event, although the pressures of drought in California had eased, many international almond buyers that had not previously purchased Australian almonds were interested to learn more and begin building relationships with Australian almond marketers.

The 2019 attendees were likewise focused on discussions about the 2020 Australian almond season and implications of the global trading environment at the time.

SIAL Trade Fair - Paris, France (2018)

SIAL Paris 2018 attracted over 160,000 visitors from 194 countries, with more than 7,200 exhibitors.

The Australian Almond stand was in the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) pavilion, a major representative body for the global nut industry, which meant the team could easily leverage the customer traffic of more than 30 different nut traders. Visitor discussions centred around the 2019 Australian almond season and Australia’s position in global markets.

    Communications

Several communication resources and regular industry updates were provided throughout the term of the project, including the Guide to Australian Almonds.

Video content was featured as part of the trade exhibitions and used in customer presentations and discussions. The key trade video showcases the Australian almond industry and was updated to reflect the 2018 and 2019 crop forecasts and information about new plantings as a major feature of the Australian almond industry’s development.
