    What is it all about?

    This project is focused on future‑proofing Australia’s banana industry against Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4 (TR4), one of the most serious threats to global banana production. Funded by Hort Innovation and delivered by the University of Queensland, the research is using advanced genetic tools to accelerate the development of banana varieties with durable resistance to this devastating soil‑borne disease. By identifying natural resistance traits earlier in the breeding process, the project will help fast‑track the delivery of more resilient banana varieties.

    Building on previous levy‑funded research, the project will investigate naturally resistant, non‑commercial banana lines to identify the genetic basis of TR4 resistance and convert this knowledge into practical molecular markers for breeders. These tools will give growers greater confidence that new banana varieties can withstand evolving strains of the disease, helping reduce crop losses, protect yields and secure long‑term productivity. The outcomes will strengthen industry preparedness and contribute to global efforts to manage TR4, supporting a more resilient and sustainable future for Australian banana growers.
