Erosion control - turf research and development facility (TU12022)

Key research provider: BioScience Australia
Publication date: Tuesday, December 23, 2014

What was it all about?

This project set out to raise awareness of the ability of turfgrass to control erosion. The team operated out of the Erosion and Sediment Control Demonstration Facility (developed under project TU10025) to demonstrate turf as an effective tool in erosion control to a range of audiences and deliver a series of training events.

The team also delivered a comparison of costs of using turfgrass and other solutions to erosion, and documentation to allow the development of an Australian Standard for turf for erosion control. This was seen through to fruition in subsequent project TU13034.

Twenty-one demonstration events were delivered to over 500 attendees through the project, and 500 information packs were distributed. A number of industry and interstate presentations were made, including one at the International Erosion Control Association conference, the Stormwater Association annual conference in New South Wales and a local council gathering in Victoria. Eight training videos were also produced.

The project team also undertook a number of activities to ensure that the project’s message and benefits were extended nationally. This included presenting at industry conferences and meetings, presenting virtual road show demonstrations, conference and scientific journal papers, industry reports, magazine articles for turf, landscaping, mining, construction and government sector journals and media releases.
