National citrus postharvest science program (CT10006)

What was it all about?

This project, which ran between 2011 and 2015, provided timely research, advice and information on the latest post-harvest approaches and technologies to packers, to assist in their adjustment to a changing competitive market.

A showcase shed program was set up, with key packers mentored over several seasons to improve practices in commercial packing. These provided models for the whole industry, and open days were held.

An advisory desk also offered timely advice on specific issues by phone and email. Where detailed information was not available, research trials were conducted for individual companies.

The project also set up the first systematic fungicide resistance survey in Australian citrus packing sheds. In addition, regular monitoring was established in packing lines and SARDI developed a scorecard able to predict the risk of fungicide resistance.

New fungicide actives were registered to facilitate export to Japan from Australia and news of the new options were communicated through seminars, newsletters, info-notes and the Citrus Australia post-harvest technical forum.

SARDI worked with Syngenta Australia to evaluate a new fungicide for the control of sour rot in citrus. Evaluation over several seasons provided data for registration of a dual active fungicide for the control of sour rot and mould.

A strong extension and advice component was incorporated, with many communication activities including seminars, workshops, individual shed visits and newsletters. The Packer Newsletter developed a solid reputation for providing sound practical information.
