About the speaker

Emily Rigby
Research Manager, Cedar Hill Flowers & Foliage, QLD

Emily received a Nuffield Scholarship to investigate protected cropping in sub-tropical climates with a focus on low- and high-tech protected cropping and the potential for farm forestry/multi-cropping as another form of protected cropping. She also investigated new or underutilised crop species, which led to research into the medicinal cannabis industry.

“I wanted to ensure we arm ourselves with the best, latest knowledge that might help producers and the industry adapt and innovate to meet the ongoing challenges of a dynamic climate and markets,” she says.

Emily is the research manager for Cedar Hill Flowers & Foliage, one of Australia’s biggest exporters of cut foliage and flowers. It produces and processes products for floriculture markets overseas. It was the world’s first successful enterprise to propagate and artificially cultivate umbrella fern and won the 2014 Australian Flower Industry Sustainable Production Award.

Emily is President of the Australian Society of Horticultural Science (AuSHS), Chair of the International Protea Working Group (IPWG), a board member of Protected Cropping Australia (PCA) and advisory member of the Australian Institute for Medical Cannabis (AIMC). Emily’s efforts have also contributed to her selection as a Qld Finalist of the National RIRDC Rural Women’s Award.
