Market access, maintenance and development program for Australian almonds

Closing date: 22 February 2019

Request for Proposal

Hort Innovation is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project Market access, maintenance and development program for Australian almonds (AL17008).

The objectives of the services being sought are to assist Hort Innovation:

  • Represent the Australian almond industry at Anuga, SIAL, Foodex and Gulfood over three to five years to:
    • Provide a platform for growers to engage with international stakeholders
    • Undertake logistical arrangements on behalf of participants
    • Survey and monitor the return on investment of the project.

  • Conduct research into the Indonesian retail market that includes:
    • Mapping of the retail environment for almonds in Indonesia covering both the snacking and ingredient markets. With regard to snacking, particular reference to the current nut snacking market will be required. This retailing mapping project needs to include both traditional and modern food retail environments
    • Research of the home shopping behaviour of 'middle class' households in relation to almonds and the nuts category. This will involve mapping the roles and shopping behaviour of the 'home owners' and the 'home helpers'
    • Understanding of the legal framework around on-pack health claims. Currently in Australia, a General Level Health Claim to say 'almonds are heart healthy' is legally permissible on-pack and in promotional material. There is a need to understand if this is legally possible in Indonesia
    • Research of the resonance of almond health benefits in sports nutrition within the Indonesian fitness segment and to develop relationships with key Indonesian health influencers such as Indonesian dietitians and fitness professionals
    • Building an on-going communication channel between the Australian almond industry and key Indonesian nut importers, wholesalers, retailers and food manufacturers. One feature will be an Australian Almonds exhibition at the Food & Hotel Indonesia Food Fair in Jakarta in July 2019.

  • Develop educational assets for the China retail market:
    • Develop a range of digital assets such as WeChat and a website that will enable the Australian almond industry to provide up-to-date information on crop availability and quality.

  • (Optional) Undertake market research into new markets such as South America - scoping study into the market opportunities.
